PURPOSE OF COURSE: This 8-hour program has been designed to provide students with the tools to effectively manage the Field Training Process at their agencies regardless of the model used.
COURSE OVERVIEW: The primary focus of the course will be to provide the necessary tools to those assigned to manage the field training process for their agencies. From the selection of a program, selection of trainers to the training of new officers this course will cover the steps and controls necessary to ensure that the program is effective and legally defensible.
COURSE GOALS: The goals of this course are to:
- Identify why proper supervision and management of the field training process is important.
- Identify an agency’s responsibility to supervise the process.
- Discuss Statutes and Case Law relevant to the field training process.
- Discuss program selection and design.
- Discuss management issues common to all field training programs.
- Selection of FTOs
- Evaluation of FTOs
- Retention of FTOs
- Training of FTOs
- Evaluation of program used.
- Handling training failures
- Scheduling and FTO burnout
- Discuss management issues unique to Evaluative Programs.

- Management of standards used.
- Management reporting
- Discuss Management issues unique to Problem-based Learning and Coaching and Mentoring Programs
